Chapter Six
Bryson rounded the corner of the hall leading to the common room in Station 2 and found Dustin leaning against the wall, cell phone in hand. âDonât do it.â
Dustinâs head lifted at Brysonâs words, their gazes met, and Dustin frowned as he returned his to the phone in his hand. âI wasnât going to.â
âBut you were thinking about it.â
âHell, yeah, Iâve thought about it.â Dustin lifted his gaze again and locked it with Brysonâs as he shoved his cell into the thigh pocket of his uniform pants. âHavenât you?â
âDamn near every fucking second since we walked out of her house four days ago,â Bryson admitted. Those last four days had decidedly been the longest of his life so far. âShe asked for space. We said weâd give it to her.â
Dustin pushed off the wall and raked a frustrated hand through his hair. âAnd she said she would call one of us soon. Soon in my book was two days ago.â
Bryson lifted a shoulder. âA womanâs concept of time is different from a manâs. Sheâll call. All we can do is keep our word and wait.â
Dustin scowled at him. âWhen did you become so fucking patient?â
âI donât know. Iâd say weâre working on what, a month, month and a half, maybe? Those demons, as you so apparently aptly named them, are ones she has to work through. Whatever they are, we know they have to do with a man.â
âHer ex-husband.â
âItâs got to be since she hasnât been with anyone else until us.â How long had she said it had been? Seven years, ten months, three weeks, and two days? Bryson had been pondering over that for days. Had her pregnancy been what had driven the wedge between Skye and her ex?
No, he didnât believe that was it. He still remembered Sunnyâs words that day in the ice cream shop when sheâd said Bryson wouldâve kept her daddy safe if heâd been there when her daddy had been in trouble. So what exactly had happened to Sunnyâs father? It was just one of the questions in the stack heâd been compiling since heâd met Skye that had yet to be answered.
âIâve been thinking,â Dustin said as he started for the door that would lead them into the common room. âMaybe we should talk to Ripley. We can ask her to runââ
Bryson bristled. âAre you fucking nuts?â
Ripley Martelli-Wayland was married to B-shiftâs Captain Flynn Martelli and Truck Company 52âs Lieutenant Xander Wayland. She was also an officer with the Cherish PD. Dustin didnât need to say anymore. Bryson knew what the man was thinking. Ripley could run a background check on Skye. While that likely would answer some of the questions they had about the woman they were falling in love with, there was no way he would ever do that to her.
Dustin stopped walking and looked back at Bryson over his shoulder. âYeah, I figured I would get that reaction out of you.â
âSkye will tell us everything when sheâs ready.â
Dustin slowly nodded.
